Virginia Beach Learning Tour

March 15, 2017 – Learning Tour at Virginia Beach Secondary Schools

Dr. Parker, Dr. Calveric, Dr. Monroe, Dr. Jones, Mrs. Lindsay, Jeff Wick, Josh Just, Kim Haislop, Beth Hausler, and Sylvia Anderson were the tourists for the day. The purpose of the visit was to see and learn about how another school system rolls out Chromebooks, what their CTE offerings were, Instructional Technology processes, Khan Academy and Google Classroom usage,  community partnerships, flexible seating, testing experiences,  and success rates, etc..

PPT’s Taken A Step Further

A randomized PowerPoint is a handy activity for qballrecall and drill.
It involves all students in the class having to be on their toes not knowing when they will be called upon or what material will be presented. Add a Qball to the equation and you’ve got real engagement!

Examples of activities – reading clocks, counting money, math facts, math equations, vocabulary, roman numerals, foreign language, ESL, periodic table, and so on.

The video below demonstrates the activity, shows the code running in the background, explains the developer tool, and hones in on the one area of code that needs modified with each activity created.

Dotstorming is a real time collaboration board for brainstorming ideas or engaging discussion. Postings are open for comments or voting. Participants can chat with others through a chat window before or during a collaborative activity.

Boards are shareable and embed nicely to your website.

Evaluating Educational Apps

ipadsApps are an extension of our learning experience by means of mobile devices. The following list has been put together by Apple for Learning and Teaching.

 

  1. Engagement – Featured App, NOVA Elements (free)
    Does the app have an intuitive interface?
    Is it user friendly?
    ‘Does the app opens new ways to learn?
  2. Developmental appropriateness – Featured App, Bobo Explores Light ($)
    Is the app’s content appropriate for the intended age group?
    Does it have  an age-appropriate interface?
    ‘Does the design appeal to the intended level’
  3. Instructional design – Featured App, BrainPop Featured Movie (free)
    Does the app support your teaching goals?
    Does it meet students learning expectations?
    Does it include interactive features that allow for feedback, assessment and reflection?
  4. Motivation – Featured App, Project Noah (free)
    Is the app’s content inviting and relevant for the intended grade level ?
    Does it include gaming principles and motivating methods?
    Does it help students connect learning with their lifeworld experiences (e.g via GPS, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi).

Develop Writing Skills With Photo Card

Are you interested in having students develop writing skills in post card format using a free post card app?

Photo Cards can be shared, embedded to a website or addressed and mailed through the US postal service (for a small fee). Stamps are also customizeable making the entire post card experience a design all your own.

The example below was created on an iPad using the Photo Card app and then shared directly to my WordPress site as a post in either publish or draft status. It was as simple as that and needless to say it worked like a charm.
